Brown Banded Cockroach Identification
Brown banded roaches are a size in between the large American roaches and small German roaches. They are rounded, like American roaches but half the size- maybe one inch in length with dark brown with light brown stripes.
Of all the roaches we’re asked to control across Oahu, the Brown Banded is the least common of the interior structural pests. There are some other kinds of roaches including the Oriental, Harlequin, Australian (which looks very similar to an American roach), or exterior “Grass Roaches.”
These roaches are few and far between but its important to know their characteristics as well to get the most effective and surest treatment available in those situations.
Brown banded roaches are interesting because they’re kind of opposite in their lifestyle as German Roaches. It’s not hard to tell the apart, it’s just that because of how they live, they must be treated in a completely different way.
Brown Banded Roach Inspection
Whereas german roaches have a crazy reporoduction capabilities, brown banded roaches have a slower reproduction rate. Now for the bad news- German roaches like water. They need to be nearby and can get the big colonies only around water sources- this is why we’re generally treating for German roaches in kitchens and bathrooms.
Yes, you’ll see german roaches in living rooms, bedrooms, and a common one- cars, but these are outliers and generaly originate in those water areas just mentioned.
Usually when german roaches are in those less common areas, its due to at least a food source or if not, a water source as well. kids unfortunately are sometimes to blame- especially in those cars. Crumbs, hidden candy, and fish food or other natural products can serve as food sources for both German and Brown Banded Roaches. The problem is, Brown Banded roaches live exclusively in areas where there ISN’T a water source and usually hidden, unused areas like closets, unused bathrooms and bedrooms, and garages.
Brown Banded Roach Control
We’ve seen Brown Banded roach infestations where they’re are a lot “oothicas”, or eggs sacks attached to the wall of cabinets or closets we’re these pest are most likely to be found. Generally we can start off with baiting and not have you removed items from infested areas, however in serious infestation it is recommended to go ahead and clean out cabinets to get a more thorough and quick acting treatment.
