The brown dog tick is the tick (and the only tick!) that afflict dogs and dog owners here in Hawaii.
Ticks in Hawaii
Next to bedbugs, ticks are probably the most difficult pest to control. Like bedbugs, there needs to be 100% population control, which can take time as ticks are very good at hiding up and away from many product treatment areas from pest control professionals. A thorough inspection must be made and thorough treatment applied to areas where ticks will come into contract.
Tick Treatments On Oahu
Like fleas, tick infestations will require pet owners to have their pets treated and on veterinarian prescribed medicines. We say “veterinarian prescribed” because there are many over the counter and internet purchased products that do not work, or do not work well. With pet pests like fleas and ticks, the pest products need to be used for both quick control of the pests and quick relief for your pets happiness.
Other proactive helps with tick treatments include frequent examination of your pet for any ticks that may not have come in contact with our products or pet medicine or reinfestation from an outside source. Keeping the pets from wandering all over the house will also help in keeping any pest population confined to a smaller area so that fewer pesticides need to be used and quicker control can be achieved. If there are more places to treat, there are more places they can hide, thus prolonging the infestation.
Bedbugs are most of the time in the immediate vicinity of a bed, couch, or char that has been infested. If a pet wanders all over the house and lays down wherever, the ticks can be found in all those places too.
Tick Service in Honolulu
Tick treatments are one of the only treatments that we recommend monthly service for. This monthly service can be backed off to an every other month service within a few months depending on the control satisfaction of both property occupants and our pest technicians monitoring the control progress.
Fortunately, the ticks we have here in Hawaii do not yet carry some of the diseases found on the mainland. Lymes disease, and rocky mountain spotted fever are just two of the diseases that the Hawaii state Department of Health and Agriculture Deparments work hard to keep out.
If you discover ticks on your dog, make sure to get professional service quickly as tick infestations can get out of hand rather quickly. Like bedbugs, part of the control issue is understanding where the ticks were picked up and how likely reinfestation is. If you feel like your dog may be infested, we would recommend regular pest control services to help control ticks when they pop up in your life.
