Centipedes are the worst! Although they don’t usually cause life threatening stings, they can definitely send someone to the hospital if they’re bitten on or near the lymph nodes. We’ve seen it happen to big military guys, so kids are even at a worse disadvantage because of their size and the weight to venom ratio.
Centipede Control on Oahu
People definitely have their favorite ways to be rid of centipedes. Whether it’s cutting them in half with scissors or spraying them with brake fluid, there’s no shortage of local style pest control from you akamai (smart) kamaaina (residents). Everyone knows the old “beat ‘em with a slippah (flip flop)” method rarely works. They’re a lot tougher than the big 747 roaches we have flying around as well. But what does work? Well, rest assured, as one of the biggest insects in size as well as a fear factor, we’ve tested many products for their efficacy on centipedes and we’ve found the best products for use on these pests.
Centipedes, as well as millipedes, are found in damp areas, where the sunlight doesn’t get to easily. That may be under leaf litter or downed palm fronds or even underneath items that don’t move often like toys or yard equipment. It will help to keep decaying plantlife from building up in the yard, but sometimes you can’t completely eliminate those harborage areas. Composting pits and areas like that are perfect locations for centipedes to thrive, and generally will stay outside, but we’ve seen them sneak into areas many times and in some cases climb up the side of houses and access even second floor windows.
