Millipede Control on Oahu

In Hawaii, we have two different kinds of millipedes- the smaller black millipedes, and the reddish brown larger millipedes. Some people think that it’s the centipedes that have all the firepower, but millipedes can actually cause physical discomfort and can cause even more problems to homes from staining floors and carpets.

Millipedes live in damp moist areas these include moist areas of the yard including rock fill areas, groundcover, and mulch. It’s not common, but we’ve some areas have really bad problems with millipedes where they will require monthly service. We find many of our hillside homes to be great incubation areas for millipedes where they can be cool underneath the houses and then enter the home through cracks and crevices. Once in, they will often dry out and can stain the carpet or tile.

We usually think of millipedes being in wetter areas like East Oahu and the North Shore, but it’s possible to see them on the west side and in dryer areas like Ewa Beach or Kapolei because of all the flora and fauna that are introduced into yard there. And mulch. Especially Mulch!
