Paper wasps are a variety of wasp we have here in Hawaii that construct (you guessed it!) paper nests for their domicile. This is opposed to mud wasps, which are solitary and we don’t actually provide service for as they are more beneficial than harmful and are more an aesthetic issue than a danger.
Paper wasps are quite dangerous and unlike bees, can sting multiple times and can attack as a group. They are some of the most dangerous pests to control as their access and ability to quickly attack can have a lethal combination. Getting attacked by a wasp colony is no fun- but falling off a roof while doing so is not a good way to go.
As pest control professionals, wasps are one of the most satisfying pests to control. It’s a really hands on experience which sometimes requires us to be on ladders or on roofs to access the nest. The treatment is relatively quick, however proper protective gear and the correct products must be used to ensure the safest and most effective elimination of these dangerous pests.
An important aspect of paper wasp control is LEAVING THE NEST after treatment is made. Unless it can aesthetically not be tolerated, our policy is to not knock down the nest because of the wasp’s propensity to quickly rebuild in the same spot. They chose the spot for some reason, whether it is protected, wind resistant, or close to a water source. Our experience is that if a nest is knocked down we will have to return to keep battling the wasps frequently, whereas if a “dead” nest is left in place, wasps will search for an alternative location away from the nest.
If you have wasp problems at your home or business, contact Kilauea to put a stop to them once and for all. Infestations vary widely, so we can offer an estimate on work, but must inspect the property to give a verified quote.
