Roof rats are probably 90% or more of the work we do as far as rodent control in Hawaii is concerned. These pests are the ones banging around in your roof at night and can do real structural damage and ruin food that they share with you.
In addition to the economic and structural problems rats can cause in your home or business, they are also highly filthy and can carry several diseases that can spread to humans. And if that weren’t enough of a reason to get rodents out of your place, they can cause structure fires from chewing on electrical wiring in the walls and ceiling. Rats’ teeth are always growing and causes them to have the need to chew on everything in their (your!) home.
Roof Rats are grey with pointed noses, as opposed to the larger brown Norway rats. As their name suggests, they prefer to live up high in trees or attics but will creep around to find food and forage as their colony expands. Norway rats usually nest in the ground, but both Norway rats and Roof rats can be found in sewers.
Sometimes, people will call and say, I have a mouse in my attic. That is wishful thinking. Mice usually are seen on the floor and don’t go into high levels very often. Sometimes there is confusion between mice and baby rats. The difference is the tails of rats are longer than their bodies. Aside from that, they can look quite similar.
Our service begins by making an inspection of the property and identifying ares where rats can gain access, as well as likely harborage areas and any conducive conditions where rats would prefer. We can make recommendations to homeowners about reducing conducive conditions as well as recommend exclusion work if need be. Exclusion work is usually only recommended if there is a bad or continuous rodent issue on a property. Otherwise, the occasional use of bait boxes will be sufficient and more cost effective.
When we have regular customers with rodent bait boxes, we fill them as needed on the property as putting out bait, is not an effective “preventative” measure. Unfortunately, there are rats all over our islands and if they are happy at your neighbors home, we recommend not doing anything to attract them.
As a suggestion, we find many people calling specifically for rat work, will get our home pest control service as most of the rat work is actually included with the service and for not much more they can get control of all the ants, roaches, centipedes and other pests in and around their home. The efficiency is quite cost effective to take care of them all together!
