These are the large flying roaches. They are sometimes referred to by Oahu locals as “747’s” or the “Hawaii State Bird.” They’re known by their common name American roaches, which is how Kilauea Pest Control refers to them.
American Roach Identification
American roaches are the large brown roaches that we see crawling and flying around Oahu. They can be 1 – 2 inches long and are uniformly brown in color. They have a very light tan stripe across their thorax.
Fortunately, they don’t often infest inside a home. American roaches breed outdoors, commonly in sewers. So, they are usually coming from the outside into your home or building. Even with a pest control treatment, it is possible that they fly through untreated cracks around windows and other entry points.
American Roach Service
Because American roaches ordinarily do not infest inside homes a good exterior treatment is the best place to start. An exterior treatment from Kilauea Pest can help reduce most of the population on the outside so that there’s not much left to come indoors. Like most pests, American roaches do not like publicity and will generally stay in areas where there’s not a lot of activity. These areas might include attics, garages, and cabinetry. Sometimes people ask us about droppings they find in their cabinet drawers. We can determine by shape and size of the droppings whether it is American roaches, mice, or another pest.
