Roach Species in Hawaii
There are several varieties of roaches that specifically infest the indoors and several which aren’t considered “structural pests” like the Polynesian roach and the little oval guys that run around in the yard- not sure of the names on those.
Anyhow- the most common roaches we find inside in Hawaii are the German roach, the American roach, the Brown Banded roach as well as the harlequin roach and Australian roach. Academic literature suggests oriental cockroaches are another structural pest that causes problems here in Hawaii, however, in actuality, we don’t see these pests too often. In fact, American roaches, German roaches, and to a lesser extent Brown Banded roaches are the main problem roach species of any consequence in Hawaii.

Roaches are thigmatrophic, meaning they prefer enclosed, tight spaces to live in, like cracks and crevices. The prefer pressure on their bodies and hide in these areas for safety. Roaches, unlike many other pests, are highly adaptable and we find both bait aversion and pesticide resistance to be challenged with proper roach control here in Hawaii.
