Apparently, more than you might think.
Did you know Kilauea has a pool service team now? Yep! Along with taking care of Hawaiʻi’s pest problems, we’re helping homeowners keep their pools in shape with Kilauea Pool Service.
During a recent routine service, our pool technician noticed several small holes in a customer’s backwash hose. While this might seem like a typical pool maintenance issue, it also caught our pest control team’s attention.
We made an Instagram Reel explaining what happened and why our pest control team was interested. Check it out here!
How a Leaky Pool Hose Can Create Favorable Conditions for Termites
A pool backwash hose carries water away from the filtration system during backwashing. When the hose has holes, water can escape before reaching its intended drainage area.
Depending on where the hose is positioned, that water could collect in the same area, potentially leaving the surrounding soil damp.
And that’s where subterranean termites come into the picture.
Subterranean termites rely on moisture to survive and typically live underground, traveling through protected mud tubes to reach wood and other food sources. Hawaiʻi is also home to Formosan subterranean termites, which are known for their large colonies and ability to cause significant structural damage.
When water repeatedly collects near a home’s foundation, it can contribute to conditions that support subterranean termite activity. And pool equipment isn’t the only thing worth checking. Leaking outdoor faucets, irrigation lines, and poorly directed downspouts can also leave excess moisture around your home’s foundation.
Of course, finding a damaged backwash hose doesn’t mean termites are present. Our pool team identified an equipment issue that could contribute to conditions our pest control technicians pay attention to during termite inspections.
